The pilot 'First
Aid Box' (E & R transit facility) was completed in 2009, on the
old site of St Thomas's Hospital, just south of the River Thames.
The government boasts that it is the most advanced virtual medical
transit centre in the world. Patients from the London region with
emergency medical conditions are now rushed to the First Aid Box,
which monitors their condition in a series of totally corridor free
spaces, and then 'transplants' them, via an air ambulance service,
to Heathrow or Gatwick. From here they are sent out to high-tech hospitals
in France, Germany or Greece.
